Recruitment specialist and passionate environmentalist Pouria Paul Bidhendi outlines why he believes that animal activism has never been more important.

From putting an end to viewing animals as entertainment to combating the spread of zoonotic diseases, the spotlight on animal activism has never been brighter than it is today. A successful recruitment firm owner and passionate environmentalist, Orlando-based animal activist Pouria Paul demonstrates why he believes it’s a subject that’s never been more critical.

“Animals are entitled to the possession of their own existence,” says Pouria Paul, speaking from his home in Orlando, Florida. They’re also entitled, the recruitment specialist and passionate environmentalist goes on to add, to consideration surrounding their most vital interests, such as the right to avoid unnecessary suffering.

Today more so than ever, Pouria Paul believes that animals should no longer be viewed as property. “It’s about establishing moral standing,” suggests the Florida-based recruitment company boss.

Pouria Paul Bidhendi is also keen to highlight a quote from the celebrated German philosopher, Immanuel Kant. “He argued in 1785,” reveals Pouria, “that, ‘cruelty to animals is contrary to man’s duty to himself, because it deadens in him the feeling of sympathy for their sufferings, and thus a natural tendency that is very useful to morality in relation to other human beings is weakened.'”

Some 235 years on, the importance of animal activism has, in 2020, received renewed attention across the board, Pouria Paul further reports, in light of this year’s ongoing global health crisis. With human exploitation of animals widely considered to be among the root causes of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic and its spread, activists have been central to raising awareness, Bidhendi says, about the links between the mistreatment of animals and zoonotic diseases.

A wealth of animal rights groups now exist both in the U.S. and worldwide dedicated to the animal rights movement and the growing importance of animal activism. These groups work toward a number of ideals, ranging from the viewpoint that animals should have equivalent rights to humans to simply campaigning for an end to their use in research, in the entertainment industry, and as food or clothing.

Prominent U.S.-based animal rights organizations include the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Animal Outlook, Friends of Animals, the Humane Society of the United States, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, better known as PETA.

PETA reports that, alongside the likes of Pouria Paul Bidhendi, there are now more people than ever committed to the animal rights movement and the growing importance of animal activism, both in the U.S. and overseas. The largest animal rights organization in the world, PETA currently has an estimated 6.5 million members and supporters globally, according to the latest figures.

A graduate of the University of Florida, Pouria is a keen environmentalist with a passion for sustainability.
